Rochelle Saldana, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Maxim Healthcare, has been named to the Frontline Honors Awards Class of 2025 by Home Health Care News.
To become a Frontline honoree, an individual is nominated by their peers. The candidate must be:
- A dedicated, high-performing frontline worker who delivers exceptional experiences and outcomes
- A passionate worker who knows how to put their vision into for the good of their respective industry, the patients and residents they serve, and their families
- An advocate for their industry and their fellow colleagues
Home Health Care News recently caught up with Saldana to discuss her time in the home health & home care industry.
HHCN: What drew you to this industry?
Saldana: Honestly, I was drawn to home care out of exhaustion, I had two small children, a new house and a job that was so exhausting, I felt overwhelmed. Personal home care was near my new house. I needed a change and thought I would give it a try. I fell in love.
HHCN: What’s a misconception you had about this work before you started – and how has reality differed?
Saldana: I was worried about going into people’s homes. That is their private space. I was worried about feeling like an intruder and being bored.
The reality was so much better. I was welcomed wholeheartedly. They were grateful for the assistance, and they taught me to be a better caregiver.
HHCN: Was there a moment in your career when you realized, “This work really matters”? What happened?
Saldana: I am not sure there was one moment; there were many. You are meeting these families at a very vulnerable time in their lives. A little care and compassion can make it easier for them. Providing them with what they need is very fulfilling.
HHCN: What’s the most valuable skill you’ve developed on the front lines that people often overlook?
Saldana: Nursing skills are very important and very specific to each case. You need to be willing to jump into their world and learn what they need from you to make their daily lives easier. Empathy and flexibility are your most important skills in home care.
HHCN: What’s one decision leaders make that has a bigger impact on frontline workers than they might realize?
Saldana: Recruiting is something that has a great impact on frontline workers. Nursing as a whole has been strained since the pandemic. Not having enough staff that are reliable and knowledgeable is very stressful for the workers in the home and the family. It would be a fantastic decision to partner with nursing schools so that home care is on the list of viable jobs from the beginning.
HHCN: What’s a simple change – policy, tool, or mindset – that would make frontline work more effective?
Saldana: One simple change they can make that would have a great impact on the frontline workers is improving availability of paid time off.
Paid time off allows the workers to spend time away with their families. It prevents burnout and protects the workforce you have already invested in. It will go a long way in showing them how much they are valued.
HHCN: What gives you optimism about the future of this industry, despite its challenges?
Saldana: I am optimistic for the future of home care because people are happiest at home with family around them. The growth in artificial intelligence (AI) and telehealth, as well as recruitment and training of more nurses, are the keys.
