On the heels of a Risk Analysis, I have seen many organizations get overwhelmed by the large lists of items to remediate. Sometimes the risks with the highest priorities also carry daunting financial or implementation requirements that will cause delay. Don’t let a roadblock on a high-risk item keep you from moving down your list to implement actionable items as you develop your comprehensive plans. Quick easy wins help build momentum and will still help improve your security posture. Follow these points to help avoid getting stuck in analysis paralysis:
· Prioritize Tasks Focus on the most critical risk that have the greatest impact. If the top item on the list has a blocker, move to the next.
· Limit Information intake Avoid overwhelming yourself with too much information instead focus on actionable items.
· Set Deadlines Establish deadlines for making decisions to keep process moving.
· Accept imperfection Acknowledge the perfect solution isn’t achievable and focus on continuous improvement.
· Test as you go Test your plans and security measures early and often to ensure effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
Remember, managing risk is a journey that does not have a straight-line path – every single step forward makes a difference.
